Green tea, which is one of the most popular beverages in Japan, is good for the body as it has properties that keep down blood pressure and cholesterol. It's also said to protect your body from bacteria that cause food poisoning. There are about five different kinds of tea now------sencha, bancha, hojicha, genmaicha and matcha----and they are all drunk plain, without milk or sugar. The use of tea is said to have come from China during the Nara period (710-793), when numerous Japanese Buddhist monks visited China and brought back tea seeds to Japan. (Cultivation of tea didn't start until 12th century) However, it wasn't until the mid 16th century that the processing method that we use today for sencha, bancha, genmaicha and hoojicha was invented. Until then only matcha (powdered tea which is made by being steamed, dried and then grounded into powder)was produced and drunk by mixing with hot water instead of steeping it briefly.

The two items above are huge tea cups with tops. The one on the left (TCS1) features the word "Kiyomizudera", and the one on the right "Kinkakuji", written in Japanese. These tea cups are supposed to be ornaments, but you may drink tea from them...or maybe use it as a beer mug?

We call a set of tea cups like this(following two sets), one being slightly smaller than the other, meoto jyawan (cups of a couple) as smaller one represents a wife while the bigger one represents a husband

Maiko
:Maiko are apprentice geisha in the area around Kyoto and Osaka. In the old days, they began their training as children and entertained guests at parties from their early teens, but these days the few who pursue this career do so at a later age and without undergoing the maiko apprenticeship. During their apprenticeship maiko are schooled in such arts as classical Japanese dance and the playing of traditional drums and guitars.

Geisha: Geisha are female entertainers dressed in kimono and trained in the traditional arts (singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments) who work as party companions and hostesses. One thing that should be pointed out, as they seem to be misunderstood by many people, is that geisha are not prostitutes. The word geisha literally means "one who entertains", and that's what they d
