Tatami Items
Tatami
are the straw mats which cover the floors of Japanese rooms. They are usually
rectangular in shape (about 90cm wide and 180cm long) and made of hard-packed,
sewn straw that is covered with a kind of rush called igusa with the edges
hemmed with cloth. The size of rooms in Japan are expressed as the number
of their tatami. Even if a room does not have tatami mats, the size of
the room is expressed by how many tatami mats would fit in there.
