Geta Sandals
Geta sandals are outdoor footwear consisting of a thong attached to a wooden
platform with two crosswise supports (or any wooden sandals with separate
heels). Their origin dating back to Yayoi period (300 B.C. - 300 A.D),
geta are still worn in Japan today with summer kimono called yukata. Some
men wear geta (GET2) with modern clothing like jeans but that's very unusual.
Zori sandals, on the other hand, have flat soles and are often made made
of material other than wood such as straw, igusa, leather and vinyl.

 Zori Sandals utilize tatami material. Tatami are the straw mats which
cover the floors of Japanese rooms. They are usually rectangular in shape
(about 90cm wide and 180cm long) and made of hard-packed, sewn straw that
is covered with a kind of rush called igusa with the edges hemmed with
cloth. The size of rooms in Japan are expressed as the number of their
tatami. Even if a room does not have tatami mats, the size of the room
is expressed by how many tatami mats would fit in there. |
