Tenugui-Japanese Towels
Tenugui Towel, rectangular cotton gauze cloth used mainly as a towel or
headcovering, was one of the most common household items up until a few
decades ago when terry cloth towel (which we used to call Seiyo (Western)
Tengui) become popular. It is safe to say that we have known no other everyday
item that is as handy and versatile as tenugui is. Although everyday use
of tenugui dropped significantly, Tenugui remains necessary part of matsuri
(festival) costume. People wear them as headbands for absorbing perspiration.
Also still today some shop owners and business firms distribute tenugui
at their openings or simply as Thank-you gift. Tenugi now has more of symbolic
and esthetic values (because of the various graphic designs) rather than
practical values. People have found more ways to use it from place mats
to tapestry for decorating their homes. How to use this piece of cotton cloth is totally up to you!
