(WIN2264)Kingyo (goldfish), probably the most popular pet among the Japanese
until recent history, were originally artificially bred in China from a
kind of carp. It was introduced into Japan in the 16th century and now
over 20 varieties are raised in Japan, some of which were originally imported
and others developed domestically. Street vendors carrying goldfish in
wooden tubs was a common site until about 50 years ago. Exports of goldfish
to the States started in the late 19th century and kept growing until around
1930, when the U.S.A succeeded in mass goldfish breeding. |
