 This windchime (WIN0813) is a miniature replica of a jizaikagi, a pothook which
hung over the 4- or 5-foot-square open, wood-burning hearth (called irori) of a
traditional Japanese home living room. Irori functioned as both a heating and
lighting device as well as a stove. In addition, a shelf built above the irori
was used to place foods and firewood for drying. With the advancement of modern
cooking and heating technologies, the irori and its accompanying jizaikagi are
seldom seen anymore, but in their role of importance in the traditional Japanese
lifestyle, they are nostalgically associated with the bygone "Good ole
days."
